Flying Forest Selects Devaltec to Drive Pioneering Bio-Oil Production in Finland

London, February 26th, 2025 – Flying Forest today announced the appointment of Devaltec as strategic project development partner for its flagship facility in Iisalmi, Finland.

This strategic partnership brings together Flying Forest’s established expertise in transforming forestry waste into renewable products including bio-oils for chemicals and industrial processes, as well as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Devaltec’s proven project development capabilities aligned with decarbonization/regulatory framework, and full -scale project delivery.

The collaboration will see Devaltec streamline development for Flying Forest’s modular syn gas and bio-oils facilities, from permitting and conceptual engineering through to construction and ESG compliance.

Devaltec’s experience in clean-energy frameworks will assist Flying Forest to become a key supplier of low-carbon energy solutions for multiple industries.

Devaltec have played pivotal roles in the success of similar ventures for converting end-of-life tires into low-carbon fuels and recovered carbon black.

The transferable ‘concept -to-commercialisation’ knowledge from these projects such as, robust technology validation, scalable engineering design, and effective stakeholder engagement will be of direct benefit to Flying Forest.

Flying Forest and Devaltec share a track record of reducing project risk in emerging green markets, establishing bankable supply chains, and ensuring impactful ESG outcomes.

Situated in Iisalmi, Flying Forest’s first plant will generate opportunities for local technical professionals for Finland’s ambition to be at the forefront of global decarbonization. The project is expected to yield 150,000 tons of SAF annually by 2030, alongside advanced bio-oils that help reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions in heavy industry.

“We are excited to partner with Devaltec, whose experience in de-risking clean-technology ventures will be invaluable in accelerating our mission to transform forestry waste into bio-oils and SAF,” said Dr. Paul Groves, CEO of Flying Forest. “Devaltec’s comprehensive support ensures we meet the highest environmental standards and expedite our efforts to decarbonize both industrial processes and global aviation.”

“Flying Forest is driven by a team experienced in emerging green markets; they have exceptional capabilities of feedstock supply, and commitment to innovation and project de-risking, both needed to succeed in the industry of waste-based biofuels,” noted Filipe Marques, General Manager of Devaltec. “We look forward to applying the best practices we developed alongside our world class sustainable energy technology partners, and to position Flying Forest as a world leader in sustainable bio-oil and aviation fuel production.”

Both companies view this alliance as a catalyst for broader industry change, proving that next-generation biofuels can be produced at scale in a cost-effective, low-impact manner. By integrating proven technologies, best-in-class engineering, and ESG leadership, Flying Forest and Devaltec are setting a benchmark for the sustainable production of bio-oils.
